CHILD CARE COUNSELOR
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general professional and administrative guidance and supervision and with latitude for independent professional judgment, the Counselor functions as a member of the inter-disciplinary staff to maintain a trauma informed, strength based structured residential treatment program for adolescent females. The Counselor works closely with the facility manager, clinical director and therapist to implement, and evaluate the provision of individual, group, family, and supportive counseling services in accordance with the client’s plan for treatment and the approved Plan for Program Activities and Treatment Services. The Counselor assures that the health and daily living needs of each client is met and promotes the maintenance of a safe and sanitary environment within the residential facility.
1. Position Requirements:
Direct care staff shall meet one of the following requirements prior to employment:
(A) Have a Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree is preferred;
(B) Have a valid Child Development Teaching Permit;
(C) Have completed 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Development, or Foster and Kinship Care Education and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth;
(D) Have a valid certificate as an Alcohol Counselor, Drug Counselor or Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth;
(E) Have a valid Vocational Training certificate, credential or documentation demonstrating that the individual is a trade journeyperson who instructs children in vocational skills and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth; or
(F) Have previously been employed as a staff or volunteer at a group home or short-term residential therapeutic center for at least one year.
(H) Direct care staff shall be at least 21 years of age.
(I) Three (3) to four (4) year’s satisfactory employment in behavioral health counseling is preferred for applicant’s who lack certification in alcohol/drug counseling from an accredited college.
4. Skills:
a. Thorough knowledge of behavioral health issues, including mental illness and alcoholism and other drug dependencies, and appropriate counseling techniques; including but not limited to: the ability to recognize the early signs and symptoms of illness; the ability to promote the need for professional assistance; and the ability to recognize individuals who are under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs, using trauma informed culturally relevant modalities and techniques.
b. Practices compliance with HIPAA Standards and appropriate code of ethics
c. Knowledge of state and county guidelines as applied to group homes.
d. Ability to facilitate didactic, recovery, 12-Step-oriented, and support groups and classes.
e. Computer capabilities and capability to complete mental health progress notes.
f. Ability to direct others.
g. Documentation of progress and complications in client’s recovery process as required by State, County and board policies.
h. Knowledge of motivational enhancement therapy and strength-based, trauma informed interventions.
i. Knowledge of good housekeeping and sanitation principles.
j. Knowledge of the principles of nutrition, food preparation and storage, menu planning, and the ability to maintain compliance with such.
k. Knowledge of the principles of communicable illness prevention and control.
l. Sensitivity to the needs of adolescents and the capacity to tolerate and deescalate emotional and/or stressful incidents in a professional manner and use of prudent parenting standards.
m. Considerable knowledge of community referral resources and the ability to use them appropriately. Ability to liaison with judicial system, social service, other agencies as required by needs of clients;
n. Good written and verbal communication skills;
o. Ability to coordinate the work in an interdisciplinary team setting.
p. Fluency in both English and Spanish (bi-lingual) is preferred but not required.
