Program and Role Summary

Wayfinder’s Davidson Program for Independence (DPI) is a comprehensive residential rehabilitation program for adults ages 18 and older who are blind or visually impaired, many with recent vision loss. Participants learn assistive technology, orientation and mobility, braille, and independent living skills. Each client pursues individualized goals that lead to a confident transition to an independent life and education or employment.

The primary focus on the Adult Residential Counselor, is to provide guidance, assistance and services to students.  Maintains rules of the Wayfinder Family Services and Davidson Program for Independence (DPI) guidelines as applied to the residence.  Oversees, assists and instructs in the housekeeping of the dormitory and supervises students in the residence. 

This is a part-time position. The schedule available is : Friday & Saturday (11:00pm - 7:00am)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and supervises a variety of evening leisure activities.     
  • Instructs and assists students in the cleaning and maintenance of the residence each week.        
  • Reinforces and supervises activities of daily living and social skills in the residence.   
  • Overnight counselors check each room and secures the dormitory for the evening. 
  • Informal counseling of students and crisis intervention.        
  • Completes all student related paperwork (e.g., schedules, reports, student rights guidelines, medical reports, etc.) within prescribed timelines.
  • Inventory supplies on a monthly basis and order necessary supplies.
  • Other duties as outlined in the position description.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma required.        
  • Some college; aptitude for and experience in social relations, preferred.        
  • Ability to work effectively with disabled individuals, and establish a household atmosphere.        
  • Knowledge of community health and welfare resources.
  • Valid CA Driver License with a minimum of two (2) years good driving history and must be approved by the agency’s insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles.
