Position Summary

So Cal Behavioral Therapy seeks a qualified and experienced American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to facilitate communication between deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing individuals across educational, healthcare, and community settings. The ideal candidate demonstrates superior interpreting skill, cultural awareness, and professionalism in all assignments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate, culturally competent ASL interpretation in educational, medical, social service, and professional environments.
  • Interpret spoken English into ASL and vice versa, maintaining meaning, tone, and intent.
  • Adapt communication to suit varied settings and client needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Collaborate effectively with staff, clients, and community partners.
  • Engage in ongoing skill development to maintain professional proficiency.

Minimum Qualifications

Proposals or applications will only be accepted from interpreters who meet the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Language Proficiency:
    • Demonstrate language proficiency from an accredited or nationally recognized institution, such as (but not limited to):
      • American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)
      • Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI)
      • or another recognized sign language proficiency body.
  2. Proficiency Rating:
    • Must be assessed as on the ASLPI or SLPI rating scale.
  3. Conversational and Receptive Skills:
    • Possess the ability to sustain fully shared conversations with in-depth elaboration across both social and work-related topics.
    • Demonstrate excellent comprehension and receptive skills in a wide range of contexts.
  4. Expressive Language Mastery:
    • Exhibit a very broad ASL vocabulary, near-native fluency, and natural prosody.
    • Demonstrate excellent command of ASL grammatical structures and effective use of classifiers and non-manual markers.
  5. Professional Experience:
    • Previous experience interpreting in educational, healthcare, or community service environments is strongly preferred.
