Position Summary
So Cal Behavioral Therapy seeks a qualified and experienced American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to facilitate communication between deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing individuals across educational, healthcare, and community settings. The ideal candidate demonstrates superior interpreting skill, cultural awareness, and professionalism in all assignments.
Key Responsibilities

Provide accurate, culturally competent ASL interpretation in educational, medical, social service, and professional environments.

Interpret spoken English into ASL and vice versa, maintaining meaning, tone, and intent.

Adapt communication to suit varied settings and client needs.

Maintain confidentiality and follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.

Collaborate effectively with staff, clients, and community partners.

Engage in ongoing skill development to maintain professional proficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
Proposals or applications will only be accepted from interpreters who meet the following minimum qualifications:

Language Proficiency:
-
Demonstrate language proficiency from an accredited or nationally recognized institution, such as (but not limited to):
-
American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)
-
Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI)
-
or another recognized sign language proficiency body.

Proficiency Rating:
-
Must be assessed as on the ASLPI or SLPI rating scale.

Conversational and Receptive Skills:
-
Possess the ability to sustain fully shared conversations with in-depth elaboration across both social and work-related topics.

Demonstrate excellent comprehension and receptive skills in a wide range of contexts.

Expressive Language Mastery:
-
Exhibit a very broad ASL vocabulary, near-native fluency, and natural prosody.

Demonstrate excellent command of ASL grammatical structures and effective use of classifiers and non-manual markers.

Professional Experience:
-
Previous experience interpreting in educational, healthcare, or community service environments is strongly preferred.
